C.J. Stroud has made his stance on a potential extension known this offseason, the first in which he can sign a long-term deal. It increasingly seems as though the Texans are prepared to wait, though.
A recent report confirmed team and player are not close to an extension agreement right now. It is likely that will remain the case for the time being. During a recent NFL Live appearance, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted (video link) talks between Stroud and the Texans are “essentially on pause” at the moment.
Houston made the obvious choice of exercising Stroud’s fifth-year option this spring. That move ensured he will remain under team control through at least 2027. With plenty of time remaining before a second contract needs to be finalized – and the possibility of the franchise tag being in play – a patient approach on the Texans’ part would be easy to understand. Using 2026 as an evaluation period could give both sides further clarity for whenever a new round of negotiations take place.
Stroud enjoyed one of the best rookie seasons in NFL history during the 2023 campaign. The former No. 2 pick helped lead his team to the divisional round of the playoffs that year, a feat which has been repeated twice since then. Stroud’s playoff showings have increasingly become the subject of scrutiny, however. He committed seven turnovers in two postseason contests in 2025, largely undoing the work of an elite defense.
The Texans have been willing to make numerous big-money commitments on that side of the ball. Pass rusher Will Anderson (selected one pick after Stroud) also had his fifth-year option picked up, but he has since received a market-setting extension. The likes of Danielle Hunter and Azeez Al-Shaair have finalized lucrative new Houston deals of their own this offseason.
There is of course still time for Stroud, 24, to join that list prior to Week 1. As things stand, though, the chances of a deal being worked out in time for the start of the coming season are decreasing.
