The Falcons have stated that all snaps taken by the Falcons 1st first-round draft pick will be at the edge rusher position.
The 15th overall pick for the Atlanta Falcons in the 2025 NFL Draft is a defensive chess piece in the making. Although the team has stated that his snaps would predominantly be at the edge rusher position because they didn't want to overwhelm him during his rookie season, it may be a bit of mind games.
The Falcons have gathered pieces for the defense during the offseason and the NFL Draft—new faces like Leonard Floyd, Divine Deablo, Jalon Walker, and James Pearce Jr. (Atlanta's other first-round pick at number 26 overall) will all require playing time and provide so much aggressiveness that Atlanta wants to develop as a whole anyway.
So why would you not want all weapons on the field simultaneously? Throwing opposing teams off when it comes time to game-plan and scheme for Atlanta is more of a gamesmanship situation. Running the 4-3, which is basically a five-man front, may require Walker to slide back to the linebacker position, so Floyd and Pearce Jr. can also provide pressure.
The 3-4 would also be a different situation that would make it difficult for all edge rushers in Atlanta to get a piece of the action unless one or two could drop back into coverage. Walker is too versatile only to take snaps at the edge. There will be times when Atlanta will want Walker and Pearce Jr. on the field simultaneously to see what trouble they can bring together for opposing quarterbacks.
Getting these names on the field will require a ton of shifting. David Onyemata, Zach Harrison, Brandon Dorlus, and Kaden Elliss are also huge parts of the first and second levels of the defense. As it stands, and training camp hasn't even started yet, Walker is listed as a starter on the depth chart at the linebacker position.
Walker can cover, has exceptional closing speed, and has a high motor with a versatile nature. Look for Atlanta to keep fresh players on the field while they adopt the new aggressive nature that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich wants to implement. Having a plethora of talent on the defense is a great problem and a refreshing sight in Atlanta.
