Falcons breakout candidates: Richie Grant

Breakout candidates come in many different shapes and sizes. The Falcons‘ roster features more than a handful of players that could establish themselves in 2023. Some have star potential, while others are just hoping to turn into solid contributors. Since there are so many and we are in a dead period, I will do them individually, beginning with the first second-rounder of the new regime’s tenure — Richie Grant.

Taken out of UCF in the 2021 draft, Grant hasn’t quite lived up to his lofty draft status, but there’s reason for optimism in 2023.

Firstly, Grant is entering his third year, which is generally when players start to break through. Development is never linear in this league, and he could experience an exponential leap.

Physically, Grant is still a versatile athlete that can play up around the line of scrimmage, impacting both the run and pass game. Between the ears is where the shortcomings arise, which should be negated as he gains more experience. Moreover, playing next to Jessie Bates III should do wonders for Grant.

He logged two interceptions and 123 tackles in 2022 after playing sparingly during his rookie season. In 2023, we could see him turn into a really solid contributor. His ceiling is high, given his physical talent. Playing on a much improved defense, primarily the front, should also benefit Grant’s play.

The Falcons need some of these Day 2 and 3 draft picks to start turning into impact players in some capacity, and Richie Grant is the one I am most excited to see reach his full potential.
