Falcons Great Michael Vick to Lead Documentary on Evolution of the Black quarterback
Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Michael Vick is set to host an upcoming documentary on the evolution of Black quarterbacks, SMAC Productions and Fubo Studios announced Wednesday. It’ll be told from Vick’s point of view and feature a bevy of former and current NFL players and coaches.

The former Falcons quarterback had this to say about the docuseries:

“I’m excited to be a part of this project because as a kid, I just wanted to have a shot at playing in the National Football League. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be the first African-American quarterback drafted No. 1. I know that was a big step for us in society. I was always told that I revolutionized the quarterback position, but I also like to give credit to the ones who I idolized as a kid and who paved the way like Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb. When you look at the evolution of the Black quarterback, it’s because of the people that came before us. And now, I’m thankful for the dual-threat concept that has changed the game for the better.”

Vick was a revolution for the NFL and the Falcons. The club made him the first Black quarterback to be selected No. 1 overall in the NFL draft. In the early 2000s, Mike Vick was idolized around America, especially in Atlanta. Personally, he was my first favorite player in any sport. He was electric and made the Georgia Dome fun, and completely turned the franchise around immediately.

Vick helped pave the way for today’s generation of Black quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Dak Prescott, among others. With interviews set up with some of the best and brightest Black figures football has ever seen, the documentary should be wildly entertaining. Mahomes is the face of the league; Doug Willimas was the first Black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, and those are just a couple of the A-listers who are making an appearance.
