Falcons Make QB Announcement Before Bengals Game

The Atlanta Falcons enter their Week 9 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals in Spain with a quarterback depth chart that carries a familiar face for the opposing side.

Andy Dalton, the longtime starter once known as the Red Rifle during his years in Cincinnati, sits as the emergency third quarterback for Atlanta.

He will not dress as an active player under normal circumstances, yet the rules leave open a narrow path onto the field if both Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa are injured.

Dalton began the season with the Philadelphia Eagles before his release in October. Atlanta signed him shortly afterward, and he has remained on the roster in a limited capacity.

This marks the second straight week he has been designated as the emergency third option. Under league rules, that designation keeps him inactive unless the two quarterbacks listed ahead of him are unable to continue.

Should both Penix and Tagovailoa leave the game with injuries, Dalton could enter; once he does, neither of the first two is permitted to return for the rest of the contest.

The practical barrier is high, and the more probable outcome is that Dalton spends the afternoon offering veteran guidance from the sideline rather than taking snaps.

Penix remains the starter after Atlanta’s decision to move forward with the second-year passer. Tagovailoa, acquired earlier in the season, continues to hold the backup role.

Speculation arose after Dalton’s signing that the veteran might push past Tagovailoa for the No. 2 spot, yet that shift has not occurred.

Tagovailoa’s own status remains fluid with the trade deadline approaching on Tuesday; if he is dealt, the depth chart would change, but for now the order stays intact.

A fourth name, Jack Strand, rounds out the listed group, though he sits well behind the established three.

The international setting adds a layer of novelty to an already unusual personnel situation. Bengals fans watching from home or from the stands in Spain will recognize Dalton immediately by the red hair that once defined him in their city.

For Atlanta, his presence provides a low-cost insurance policy against the dual risk that both of its left-handed quarterbacks could be unavailable on the same afternoon.

Health has been an ongoing concern for the Falcons at the position, and the emergency designation reflects that reality without committing an active roster spot.

Whether Dalton ever takes a snap remains unlikely. The rules require serious injuries to both players in front of him, and the coaching staff has shown no indication of elevating him into a regular backup role.

Still, his continued presence on the depth chart for a second consecutive week underscores how Atlanta has chosen to manage its quarterback room heading into the second half of the season.

The Falcons will lean on Penix and Tagovailoa against Cincinnati, with Dalton available only in the most extreme circumstance.
