It's only natural for a second-year quarterback to feel the pressure when being thrust into the starting role to start the season with or without a couple of games under his belt. But, is Atlanta putting too much pressure on Michael Penix Jr.?
Human nature and Kirk Cousins will be breathing down Michael Penix Jr.'s neck, not necessarily in a bad way, but Penix Jr. himself also knows that if he plays poorly to start the season, Cousins will be ready to put on the helmet and head to the huddle with bells on his feet.
Atlanta will start the season playing four playoff teams from a year ago in their first five games. That is pressure enough, but Atlanta has given Penix Jr. the stamp of approval and has all the faith in the world for him to get the job done. Kirk Cousins has made it known publicly and professionally that he would obviously like to be the starter.
To the public, the relationship between the two is also perfectly fine, with no animosity toward one another. If things go south for Penix Jr. to start the season, as you know, the backup quarterback is always the most popular person on the team, especially when you're getting paid a massive contract to hold a playbook and headset.
Last year, when Cousins was reeling from injury and throwing a boatload of interceptions, it was only a matter of time before Penix Jr. took over, especially after being the 8th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. This isn't a situation for Penix Jr. where Desmond Ridder is itching to get on the field. It's Kirk Cousins on the bench.
Honestly, Atlanta fans should be happy that Cousins is the go-to if Atlanta is hovering around .500 or loses a couple straight games. Other NFL teams would love to have that kind of veteran star power to turn to. Cousins is supporting Penix Jr., and the young QB hasn't felt the pressure yet.
