Falcons To Waive T Wanya Morris

The Chiefs gave up on Morris after benching him midway through the 2024 season. Kansas City had turned to Morris in Week 3 of that campaign, seeing second-round rookie Kingsley Suamataia not prove ready. But after 10 starts, Morris lost the job to in-season free agency pickup D.J. Humphries. When Humphries went down during his Kansas City debut, the Chiefs kicked All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney to the blind side and kept Morris on the bench.

Last year, the Chiefs drafted LT Josh Simmons in Round 1, after having given swing tackle Jaylon Moore a $15MM-per-year deal. Morris made one start in 2025. By 2026, a tryout body’s emergence (Kahlil Benson) provided enough comfort for the Chiefs to trade Morris to the Falcons, who have run into trouble at right tackle in recent years.

Kaleb McGary suffered a season-ending injury last summer, and Elijah Wilkinson became needed once Storm Norton hit IR as well. A journeyman who had played extensively at tackle and guard, Wilkinson played every RT snap for Atlanta in 2025. Wilkinson, however, returned to Arizona in free agency. The Falcons saw McGary retire this offseason. They signed ex-Morris Chiefs teammate Jawaan Taylor shortly after Kansas City made that expected cut.

Morris profiled as a swing tackle behind Taylor and Jake Matthews, but he may be headed elsewhere on waivers Monday — or possibly to a practice squad. Morris, who also made four rookie-year starts on a Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team in place of then-LT starter Donovan Smith, was unable to impress Falcons brass. Atlanta used a seventh-round pick on Ethan Onianwa and has 2025 trade pickup Michael Jerrell still rostered.
