Falcons Announce Michael Penix Jr. Development Before Dolphins Game

The Atlanta Falcons are currently preparing for their upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon. Atlanta is coming off a frustrating 20-10 road loss against the San Francisco 49ers in a game in which quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was relatively inefficient, completing just 21-of-38 pass attempts for 241 yards and a touchdown.

Late in the game, Penix Jr. appeared to get injured during a collision with a 49ers defender, and he has appeared on the injury report throughout practice this week, causing some to speculate that his status for the Dolphins game could be in doubt.

On Friday afternoon, NFL reporter Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network dropped the latest update on Penix Jr.'s status, as well as another key Atlanta offensive weapon.

"The #Falcons list QB Michael Penix Jr as questionable, though Penix has said he plans to play despite a bone bruise in his knee," reported Rapoport on X. "WR Darnell Mooney (hamstring) is off the report and good to go."

Mooney has had injury concerns this year dating all the way back to training camp, and has been in and out of the lineup for the Falcons so far in 2025.

Meanwhile, the team also released wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III earlier this week following two straight healthy scratches from the lineup, as well as an incident in which he was reportedly sent home from practice midway through.

The good news for Atlanta is that tight end Kyle Pitts is starting to more closely resemble the star the team thought it was selecting with the fourth pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, hauling in seven catches for 62 yards in the loss against San Francisco.

A matchup against the reeling 1-5 Dolphins should give the Falcons a good chance to reset themselves and get back on the right track, but a loss could have disastrous implications for the rest of the season.

The Dolphins and Falcons are slated to kick off on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
