The Washington Commanders need another prolific edge rusher, at least according to most fans. Adam Peters adopted a more patient approach, relying on those around last season and a couple of veteran free-agent additions to steer them on the correct path.
That's a big risk with higher stakes attached next season. However, the general manager could be looking at one more big splash before preparations for the upcoming campaign gather pace.
And one player above all else is being touted with a move to Washington after another fiery outburst regarding his contract negotiations.
Trey Hendrickson's situation with the Cincinnati Bengals shows no signs of resolving. The All-Pro defensive end wants a new deal from the franchise, handing in a trade request earlier this offseason that was granted. Both sides were reportedly willing to work something out, but that's not the case anymore.
Hendrickson's statement to Adam Schefter of ESPN revealed that the Bengals are no longer communicating when the player regarding an extension. And his frustrations are simmering to the boil if they aren't there already.
No communication has taken place between my camp and the organization post draft. The offers prior to the draft did not reflect the vision we shared and were promised last offseason if I continued to play at a high level. Coaches are aware of these past conversations. Rather than using collaboration to get us to a point to bring me home to the team, THEY are no longer communicating. I have been eagerly awaiting a resolution of this situation, but that’s hard to do when there is no discussion and an evident lack of interest in reaching mutual goals.Trey Hendrickson via ESPN
The Commanders would benefit greatly from Hendrickson's presence next season. He's one of the league's most productive pass-rushers, bringing elite-level consistency and a phenomenal work ethic to the table. He'd also be a substantial upgrade on anything Washington has right now.
No matter how much Hendrickson would help Washington's playoff push, it's not that simple. The Commanders only have five draft picks in 2026 after giving up their second-rounder and fourth-round pick for Laremy Tunsil and Marshon Lattimore, respectively. They might not have the capital to pull it off unless Peters is willing to dispose of his 2027 picks.
Hendrickson also wants a new deal. Looking at the current edge-rushing market and his exceptional numbers, somewhere around $30 million per year or more seems realistic. The Commanders have other people to pay, so it would take some maneuvering on the money side of things to get this transaction over the line.
It remains unlikely despite Hendrickson's relationship with the Bengals approaching the point of no return. But if Peters believes it can help Washington get over the hump, he'll find a way to make it work.
