First 49ers injury report for Week 10, at Jaguars
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers desperately need to right the ship in Week 10 when they travel to face the Jacksonville Jaguars.

San Francisco is looking to end a three-game losing streak that has dropped the Niners to 5-3 and dented their hopes of claiming the one seed in the NFC.

Jacksonville, sitting at 6-2 atop the AFC South, will present another stern challenge, and it's one the 49ers will face with a banged-up offensive line that could again be without its elder statesman and best player.

Injury report observations

It was already known that left guard Aaron Banks will miss this week and most likely next week's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Veteran Jon Feliciano should prove a dependable backup at that spot. The more pressing concern is Trent Williams' continued absence with an ankle injury.

Though Williams does not normally take part in practice on a Wednesday, when he is allocated a veteran's rest day, head coach Kyle Shanahan's comments that there is more going on with an ankle issue that was first thought to be a low ankle sprain but has taken longer than expected to heal will not inspire confidence of an imminent return.

Williams was seen working on a side field during practice and Shanahan expressed hope he will finally be able to practice on Thursday. If those hopes are not realized, it will raise the likelihood that swing tackle Jaylon Moore will again be tasked with filling in for the All-Pro, who has seen the 49er offense suffer from pass protection breakdowns in crucial moments and struggle to run the ball during his two games on the sideline.

Deebo Samuel's return to practice may serve as a tonic if Williams is not able to go against Jacksonville. The ultra versatile receiver has also missed the last two games, but his presence should help create more easy throws for quarterback Brock Purdy as he faces a Jacksonville defense ranked third in Expected Points Added per play.

If Samuel's fellow wideout Ray-Ray McCloud cannot shake off his illness, then Ronnie Bell would likely serve as the primary return man. Veterans Chris Conley and Willie Snead IV can each be elevated from the practice squad once more this season and the 49ers could take that option to promote one to fill out the depth chart should McCloud miss out.

Defensive end Drake Jackson was an unexpected name on the injury report, but his role will likely decrease regardless following the 49ers' trade for Chase Young. Jackson does not have a sack since registering three in the season-opening win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

That linebacker Dre Greenlaw practiced in full is a significant boost given how much he appeared to be hampered by a shoulder sprain in a poor 49ers defensive performance in the defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals last time out.

Samuel Womack III (IR) and rookies Darrell Luter Jr. (PUP) and Robert Beal Jr. (IR) all had their 21-day practice windows opened this week. The 49ers have yet to offer any indication about their plans to potentially activate any of the trio to the 53-man roster.
