The NFL offseason enters another stage now that the frenzied start of free agency and the draft are behind us. But the Green Bay Packers and GM Brian Gutekunst will continue to look at ways to improve the roster. The Packers could add a free agent at any time if Gutekunst feels it will upgrade the team. Here are five positions where the Packers could still add a free agent before the start of training camp. This could include players available now or players who will become available after June 1. The positions are not listed in any particular order.
After the departure of Emanuel Wilson, the Packers lack a proven second string back. If anything happened to starter Josh Jacobs, the only proven option the Packers would have is Chris Brooks. Brooks’ best skill remains his blocking. He is a steady but unspectacular runner and receiver and would not be a dynamic option for the Packers if he had to play more than a game or two as the starter.
MarShawn Lloyd remains intriguing but his inability to stay healthy means the team cannot rely on him as the primary backup.
Adding an experienced free agent running back would be a smart option for the Packers as an insurance policy against injury.
Rookie defensive tackles typically take time to adjust to the NFL. The Packers selected Chris McClellan in the third round of the draft, but will he be ready to start in Week 1 as the team’s run stuffing nose tackle?
The only other player who fits the nose tackle description is second-year man Nazir Stackhouse. The former Georgia star would need to take a big step forward after his uneven rookie season to fill this role.
Will the Packers add a veteran free agent to upgrade this area of need or is it not a high enough priority to spend more money on right now?
The Packers know they are likely to start the season without Micah Parsons as he rehabs from the torn ACL he suffered last December. Lukas Van Ness will be one starter for those early three games, but the team lacks an experienced and proven option to start opposite Van Ness.
The Packers could look to add a veteran here who could give the team a short-term boost at the position. They have plenty of depth candidates but no proven players ready to step in and start in Week 1.
The Packers added only one interior offensive lineman in the draft in Jager Burton but still lack depth here. Darian Kinnard remains the only experienced backup at tackle, and he’s better suited to play on the right side than the left side.
Adding an experienced offensive lineman who could play both guard and tackle would be a solid addition to the roster before training camp gets under way.
The Packers still don’t know if Tucker Kraft will be ready for Week 1. That would leave little depth behind Luke Musgrave as the starting tight end. Furthermore, the Packers lack a proven blocking tight end, a role they will need for the entire season.
Last year, Kinnard often lined up at tight end as essentially another blocker. Kinnard adds nothing as a receiver, of course. If the Packers could add a good blocking tight end, it could bolster their tight end room and help them on special teams.
