Five Worthwhile Projects From the Jaguars Practice Squad

Aguilar showed a live arm and the ability to lead an NFL offense downfield on multiple drives this preseason. Aguilar finished the preseason 16-of-19 (84.2%) for 187 yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions. While Aguilar will likely never grow into a starter, having the 6’3” signal-caller as a career backup in Jacksonville could do wonders for his development, especially in a room that will also have nine-year veteran Nick Mullens in it.

WR Trebor Pena

One of the stars of preseason, Trebor Pena showed an impressive ability to find space and make something happen after the ball was in his hands. Pena hauled in seven of his ten targets for 91 yards and a touchdown this preseason. He was also a reliable special teams player. Overall, Pena’s ability to find space and get open, especially with the connection he has with Aguilar, suggests the two of them may have a mutually beneficial partnership that can help both of their development.

WR Michael Wortham

Speaking of explosiveness with the ball in their hands, former Montana Grizzly wide receiver Michael Wortham made one of the largest statements this preseason with his performance against the Buccaneers. Wortham ended the game hauling in three of his four targets for 47 yards, but his return game was remarkable. Wortham returned five punts for 123 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown that sealed a 19-0 shutout to end the preseason.

CB Jabbar Muhammad

Muhammad was one of the better players down in and down out for the Jaguars throughout the preseason. Muhammad was targeted a ton, but he more than held his own, causing multiple pass breakups, including the game-saving PBU against the New Orleans Saints. Muhammad is a smaller corner at 5’10”, 185 pounds; however, he is a feisty, fast defender who can give you good snaps on a down-to-down basis.

RB J’Mari Taylor

Throughout preseason, one of the talking points was which running backs would make the roster. On the 53-man roster, the Jaguars brought on all four big names in the backfield: Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr., LeQuint Allen Jr. and Ameer Abdullah. With Abdullah’s performance, it boxed out Taylor for a fifth roster spot, but that doesn’t mean that Taylor didn’t do enough to earn a spot on the team. Taylor’s hard-nosed running was enough to make the practice squad over fellow preseason running mate, Deejay Dallas. Overall, Taylor is the epitome of a worthwhile project as the Jaguars continue to build this roster.
