Football bettors, fans react to Chiefs not covering the spread in win vs. Jets

Ahead of Week 4 of the NFL season, DraftKings revealed that 91% of bets coming in were on the Kansas City Chiefs to cover the spread against the New York Jets on Sunday night.

This came after a warning ahead of the game that "the Chiefs could win on Sunday but that it will be a close enough game that they can't cover the 9.5-point spread currently set for them at sportsbooks."

The Chiefs did win on Sunday night but gave up a big first-half lead and failed in the end to cover the spread. In fact, Zach Wilson and the Jets had a legitimate chance to win the game outright though were done in by some brutal calls and non-calls late in the contest.

That made those 91% of bettors none too happy.

The Chiefs had the opportunity to score a final touchdown in the final minutes of play on Sunday night, but a careful play by Patrick Mahomes ended up keeping the score 23-20, meaning Kansas City didn't cover a spread that had dropped to 7.5 points by opening kickoff.

While an exact figure hasn't been reported yet, ESPN speculates that the Mahomes play "shifted tens of millions of dollars at sportsbooks around the nation."

As expected, many fans took to social media to air out their frustrations, and major sites on the X platform have taken notice.

It will be interesting to see how many bettors decide to put money on the Chiefs in Week 5.

They are currently 5.5-point favorites at DK to beat the Vikings in Minnesota, in case you're interested.
