Despite falling short of a Super Bowl title, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan remains recognized as one of the NFL's top offensive minds and most respected leaders. Since taking over in 2017, Shanahan has earned the admiration of his players for his relentless drive and detailed preparation.

One former 49ers player who holds Shanahan in exceptionally high regard is Richard Sherman. The All-Pro cornerback, who played under Shanahan from 2018 to 2020, recently explained what makes the coach stand out.

"He's obsessed with the game," Sherman said during a segment of The Build, a 49ers-created documentary-style web miniseries. "He's obsessed with his players. He's obsessed with how he can impact the game in a positive way and put his players in a position to be successful."

Since joining San Francisco, Shanahan has compiled a 70-62 record, including four double-digit win seasons, four NFC Championship Game appearances, and two Super Bowl berths. Yet the franchise is still chasing its first Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 season.

Still, Sherman believes Shanahan is doing everything possible to bring a championship back to the Bay.

"Everything that a coach could do to put his team in position to be as successful as they can be, I guarantee you Kyle Shanahan is doing or attempting to do," Sherman added. "He also injects confidence into his players. He has a lot of respect and regard for his players.

"He has a lot of expectations for them, and I think he got it from his dad and being around the game for a long time. He has a lot of respect for what goes into playing this game."

After a disappointing 6-11 finish in 2024, Shanahan and the 49ers enter the 2025 season with plenty to prove. With significant roster turnover and pressure mounting, this year could be pivotal for both the coach and the franchise as they aim to return to the playoffs and reestablish themselves as a powerhouse in the NFL.
