Former AFC West Rival Drops Chiefs Standings Prediction

The Kansas City Chiefs have been the most dominant team in the National Football League over the last couple of years. Last season, the reins finally got taken from them, but they will look to regain them in the 2025 NFL season. For the Chiefs, it will be about getting back to the basics and starting fresh in the new season, and making sure they have fixed the problems they had last season.

But in their division, the AFC West, they have run it for almost a decade. No one has come close to taking the reins from the Chiefs when it comes to the AFC West division.

The Chiefs have won that division since 2016 and have not looked back. The Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, or the Denver Broncos have been able to stop the Chiefs from winning it in nine seasons.

As much as the other teams have tried, nothing has worked. The Chiefs have fully taken over that division. No matter how their season is going, the Chiefs have found the way to make sure they come out on top. And since getting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, it makes it even more difficult for the other teams to overtake the Chiefs in that position.

But one former player of the Chargers organization thinks that in 2025, the Chiefs will not win the AFC West, but instead, it will be the Chargers taking over.

“I’m not just saying it because I’m a Charger. I think they’re going to win the division this year," said former Charger Shawne Merriman on Up and Adams. "I really feel that way. I don’t want to take anything away from Patrick Mahomes. They (the Chiefs) always got a great team. They got a helluva coach in Andy Reid. But truthfully, where the Chargers at, the jump that they made. Think about, remember before the season started last year, nobody saw the Chargers even being a playoff team.”

“That was the exact same team, almost that minus a Keenan Allen and some of these other guys that Jim Harbaugh took over,” Merriman reasoned. “Nobody saw them going to the playoffs, so if he’s able to do that in one year’s time, what are they gonna be looking like this year? With a full year under their belt. New guys. The coaching staff, everybody understands the system now, so if you don’t think they’re not gonna win a division, you know, it’s just, it’s crazy not to say that I think they’re the best team in the AFC West right now.”
