Former agent expects Raiders Pro Bowler to skip training camp

The Raiders and running back Josh Jacobs remain gridlocked in contract negotiations, and it's becoming more likely that the Pro Bowler will skip training camp.

"It wouldn't be a surprise for Jacobs to miss the start of the Raiders training camp on July 25 if he doesn't get a long-term deal done by the deadline," wrote former sports agent and CBS Sports contributor Joel Corry. "Some unsigned players have missed part or most of training camp to protest not getting a long-term deal and to try to minimize the risk of injury."

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network also recently noted he doesn't "anticipate Jacobs being there at the start of training camp" if he and Las Vegas don't agree to a deal before the deadline on July 17. After this date, Jacobs can't participate in training camp and games until he signs his franchise tender.

Jacobs could wait to sign the tender because he probably expected a larger reward after a career year. He led the NFL in yards (2,053 in 17 games) last season. Yet the Raiders didn't offer him a multiyear deal, giving him the franchise tag (a one-year, $10.1M contract) instead. In April, the 25-year-old spurned the tag.

Jacobs may have indicated that he and the Raiders aren't making progress on a new deal when he recently said, "Bad business" on his Twitter account. His frustration is understandable. Per Sportrac, his market value is a four-year deal worth $12.8M annually, meaning he's not receiving what he's worth.

Although his feelings are valid, Jacobs should only hold out during training camp and not the regular season.

The RB market plummeted this offseason. Stars like Dalvin Cook and Ezekiel Elliott were released and remain unsigned. Meanwhile, Saquon Barkley is still in a contract dispute with the Giants. Consequently, Jacobs not playing would create rust and diminish his value.

Jacobs is in his prime, so he could have another dominant season and show the Raiders he deserves more. Meanwhile, Las Vegas must retain elite players after missing the playoffs twice in the past three seasons.
