Former Bears Offensive Lineman Signs with Saints

The Chicago Bears have completely revamped their offensive line this offseason. The team acquired interior lineman Ryan Bates from the Buffalo Bills, signed center Coleman Shelton in free agency, drafted tackle Kiran Amegadjie in the third round of the NFL Draft, and watched Cody Whitehair depart in free agency after he was released.

Now, another former offensive lineman has signed elsewhere. According to reports on Monday from the New Orleans Saints, Lucas Patrick has signed a contract with the NFC South franchise.

Patrick appeared in 16 games for the Bears in 2023, largely playing center in front of former quarterback Justin Fields. Patrick was originally signed to provide depth on the interior offensive line while helping the youth on offense learn Luke Getsy's playbook. However, Patrick was forced into greater action and his flaws were put on display due to the lack of depth and talent up front.

Now, Patrick ventures to New Orleans, likely to continue providing depth. Patrick should be a fine acquisition for the Saints, who are signing him late in the free agency process to shore up their depth.

Bates effectively replaced Patrick this offseason and is largely considered a better option. That said, Patrick gave it his all in Chicago and was an effort player over 23 appearances in two seasons.
