Former Cardinals first-rounder Isaiah Simmons re-signs with Giants
Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

After trading him last season, former Arizona Cardinals linebacker Isaiah Simmons has re-signed with the New York Giants.

Reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, he said Simmons is no longer a free agent.

“The Giants have re-signed LB Isaiah Simmons, the former Cardinals’ first-rounder who they acquired in a trade last season,” Rapoport said.

Out of Clemson, Simmons was chosen eighth overall in the unique 2020 NFL Draft by the Cardinals, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Nebraska native played three seasons (2020-22) with the Cardinals, and became a starter in 2021. During his time in Arizona, he appeared in 50 games (37 starts), accumulating 258 tackles, 7.5 sacks, two interceptions and scored a 56-yard touchdown.

When the 2022 season concluded, the Cardinals declined Simmons’ fifth-year option, making him a free agent this season.

But before he ran his contract down in the final year, Arizona sent the 25-year-old to the Giants in exchange for a seventh-round pick in this year’s draft.

Entering into a new environment, Simmons also shifted into a new position in the NFL as he went from linebacker to safety in New York. Prior to last season, it was believed that he could slot in at safety, linebacker and even cornerback.

He played in all 17 games, starting four times. As a Giant, Simmons had 50 tackles, a sack and an interception.

Now returning and being still young, Simmons has plenty of time to live up to his potential of a first-round pick.

The Giants will be selecting at No. 6 in the 2024 NFL Draft while Arizona is at No. 4.
