Former Chargers star condemns HC Brandon Staley

It's clear former Chargers star running back Darren Sproles isn't a Brandon Staley fan.

"It's time for a new coach, I'm sorry," the RB, who played for the Chargers from 2005-10, said of the Los Angeles head coach Tuesday on Fanduel's "Up and Adams." "The way he be calling plays, sometimes it's like he's playing Madden or something like that."

Sproles' critique is harsh, but it reflects how Chargers fans feel about the coach, who's on the hot seat after underachieving in Los Angeles.

Staley wasn't dreadful in his first two seasons, posting a 19-15 record and leading the Chargers to a playoff appearance last season. Yet Los Angeles should accomplish more with a talented roster that includes stars such as quarterback Justin Herbert, running back Austin Ekeler and linebacker Joey Bosa.

Staley's teams have flopped in big moments, too. In a 31-30 playoff loss to Jacksonville last season, Los Angeles blew a 27-point lead. During its last four matchups with divisional rival Kansas City, the club lost each game by one possession.

"There are coaches already circling that Chargers job," Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio recently said on "The Dan Patrick Show." "They were doing it last year, Dan. You know, the coaches eyeballing NFL jobs want to work with the franchise QB. They want to work with Justin Herbert."

Staley might benefit from changes the organization made this offseason. It fired OC Joe Lombardi after the playoff loss, replacing him with former Cowboys OC Kellen Moore. The Chargers offense — 13th in points scored last season — should improve under Moore, whose Dallas offense finished third in points scored.

If this fails, it wouldn't be surprising to see the head coach get canned.
