It was clear from a long way out that Jamin Davis was never going to work out with the Washington Commanders. However, the linebacker looks primed to make a significant difference for his new club in 2025.
The Commanders took Davis in the 2021 NFL Draft when most fans were clamoring for offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw. Ron Rivera thought his athletic attributes could make a big impact on the defensive second level, but the previous head coach never utilized his skills effectively.
Davis wasn't suited to the interior. The former first-round pick couldn't decipher run angles effectively enough and didn't have much support around him. Rivera got fired, but the new regime gave him one final opportunity to flourish.
Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt Jr. switched Davis outside as an edge rusher. This was expected to maximize his physical profile, but the adjustments weren't quick enough. He was waived after five games and 86 defensive snaps.
Davis joined the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings soon after. The New York Jets claimed him off waivers just before the season ended, and they re-signed the Kentucky product to give him a fighting chance this offseason.
This represented the last chance saloon for Davis. Based on reports coming from the Jets' perspective, he's making the most of it.
Aaron Glenn has moved Davis to weakside linebacker in his 4-3 base scheme. This takes the pressure off from a communication standpoint in the middle while also allowing the player more freedom to wreak havoc. It's early days, but the signs are immensely encouraging.
Davis showcased his encouraging growth in the Jets' preseason win against the Green Bay Packers. He was the team's highest-graded player according to Pro Football Focus at 83.3, gaining a sack, a run stop, and no missed tackles. He also wasn't targeted in coverage, which was an ongoing frustration during his time in Washington.
Jamin Davis seems like the frontrunner to be LB3 for the #Jets. That role could play quite a bit this season.

Davis was the Jets’ highest-graded defensive player by PFF (83.3) on Saturday.
Had a sack, a run stop, didn’t miss a tackle, and wasn’t targeted in coverage.
After an underwhelming NFL journey so far, Davis might just have the coach in Glenn who knows how to ignite the spark within. He's keeping things simple, playing to his strengths, and not tasking him with anything he isn't comfortable with. Had Rivera done the same, he could still be on the Commanders.
The Commanders don't miss Davis. They have Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu manning the second level, with both earning second-team All-Pro honors and completely shifting the landscape for the better. But if Rivera's big gamble thrives with the Jets when all hope seemed lost, it'll be another stain on the coach's failed four-year tenure.
Things change quickly in the NFL. And for once, Davis has fortune in his favor.
