Questions have followed Mike McCarthy about his future job status with the Dallas Cowboys since before the preseason. The fifth-year coach of the Cowboys is in the final year of his contract.
Dallas entered their Week 14 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals with a 5-7 record. The Cowboys' chances of making the playoffs are slim, as the Washington Commanders currently have the seventh-best record in the NFC at 8-5.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn't ruled out the possibility of McCarthy returning for the 2025 season. While Dallas entered 2024 with expectations of making a deep playoff run, McCarthy has had to weather the storm of losing starting quarterback Dak Prescott to a season-ending hamstring injury in Week 9.
During an appearance Monday on 105.3 The Fan, former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said he predicts McCarthy will coach Dallas in 2025. Aikman believes the locker room wants the 61-year-old coach back.
"Short of Bill Belichick, I don't know who you're going to bring in that has a better resume, Aikman said via a transcription by The Athletic's Jon Machota. "I just feel that for a team that I really do not think is that far away ... I like the way this team is playing right now, even without their franchise quarterback.
"I sense that it's a team that really believes in Mike McCarthy. I feel the locker room wants him back. I think he's a really good football coach. I believe Jerry Jones thinks he's a really good football coach, too. ... As we stand and talk right now, I expect Mike McCarthy to be back in 2025."
