Former Cowboys WR Signs with XFL
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The third edition of the XFL - XFL 3.0, as it's often referred to - has a week under its belt. And at least one team, the D.C. Defenders, is already improving their roster.

Former Dallas Cowboys wideout Brandon Smith has been signed by the Defenders' active roster.

Smith signed with the Cowboys in 2021 as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa and has spent the past two seasons on the Dallas practice squad.

Smith had at least one highlight reel catch during the Seahawks this past preseason.

Smith never saw any regular season action and was released by the Cowboys on Jan. 30.

The D.C. Defenders are a returning team from the 2020 incarnation of the XFL, and defeated the Seattle Sea Dragons 22-18 over the weekend in both teams' first game of the season.

Former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci took the loss as the starter for the Sea Dragons, but while the Defenders registered the win, they did so with a lackluster passing game. Quarterbacks Jordan Ta'amu and D'Eriq King combined for just 93 yards passing with no touchdowns.

Just one D.C. receiver registered more than one catch, and the Defenders hope to improve on that with Smith on the roster.
