The Dallas Cowboys aren't mathematically eliminated from the NFL Playoffs, but their chances are extremely slim after Monday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Cowboys had positive momentum after two straight division wins over the Washington Commanders and New York Giants, but they were unable to keep it going with a third victory over the Bengals.
Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush threw for two touchdowns and an interception, numbers that one former Dallas great isn't impressed by.
After Rush's performance and the loss on Monday, former Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant voiced his opinion by advocating for another player to get an opportunity.
"Trey Lance deserve a shot," Bryant said on Monday night after the game.
The Cowboys elevated Rush to the starting position after Dak Prescott's season-ending hamstring injury, and Lance has been the backup over the last few weeks.
Since making his first start of the season against the Philadelphia Eagles back in Week 10, Rush has thrown six touchdowns and two interceptions. He's 2-3 since taking over for Prescott, and with the Cowboys' season all but over, Bryant is ready to see what Lance can do with an opportunity of his own.
Lance was selected with the No. 3 overall pick back in 2021 by the San Francisco 49ers. The team made it clear that he would be the franchise quarterback during the 2022 season, but he was injured two weeks into the year.
After Brock Purdy's meteoric rise to stardom, Lance was traded to Dallas in advance of the 2023 season. Since joining the Cowboys, Lance has been a reserve for Prescott and Rush, making sporadic appearances throughout the regular season.
Lance has appeared in two games this season, completing four of his six pass attempts while throwing one interception. If he were to start for Dallas before the end of the 2024 season, it would be his first start since Week 2 of the 2022 season against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Cowboys will look to get back into the win column on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. After Bryant's call for Lance to get an opportunity, we'll see if the Cowboys decide to go in a different direction at quarterback.
