While many prominent offensive and defensive players get noticed reuniting with familiar coaches in any given year, it happens with special teams players, too.
That's the case for former Miami Dolphins punter Matt Haack, who signed a one-year contract with the Denver Broncos on Wednesday according to 9News' Mike Klis. The Broncos notably have former Dolphins special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi on staff.
"Haack was Darren Rizzi’s punter in Miami. A left-footed, directional, hang-time type that is preferred in altitude environment," Klis wrote.
An undrafted free agent from Arizona State, the Dolphins signed Haack in 2017, and he punted in all 16 games that year. Haack averaged 44.5 yards per punt on 83 attempts for Rizzi's special teams, which kept Haack employed with the team for another three seasons.
In four years with the Dolphins, Haack averaged 44.7 yards per punt on 307 attempts in 64 games. Rizzi worked with Haack for two of those seasons before the coach joined the New Orleans Saints staff in 2019.
Haack joined the Buffalo Bills in 2021 on a three-year deal, and he averaged 42.9 yards per punt for the 2021 season. He lost out on the punting job for the following year to Matt Araiza in 2022, so Haack joined the Indianapolis Colts on a one-year deal.
Haack averaged 44.8 yards per punt on 70 attempts that season, but he had challenges finding a spot in 2023. He joined the Arizona Cardinals as a free agent in May 2023, but the team waived him that August, and he didn't find a job until December of that season with the Cleveland Browns.
Haack averaged 51.7 yards per punt on three attempts, but the Browns released him afterward in January 2024. He then attempted to find a job with the Bills again followed by the New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars. None of those opportunities panned out as he punted in just four games for the Giants during the 2024 season.
Haack will get a chance to revive his career in Denver after punting in at least 16 games per season up until 2023.
