Former Dolphins star shares his take on the key area Caleb Williams must improve after joint practice and fans won’t like hearing it

Last Friday, the Chicago Bears hosted a competitive and productive joint practice with the Miami Dolphins ahead of the preseason opener.

For the Bears, the session was a major day of work after head coach Ben Johnson confirmed that the majority of his starters on both sides of the ball would not play on Sunday and instead would get a lot of controlled reps in a practice setting.

Throughout the day, the Bears' defense had a strong showing going up against the Dolphins starting offense. Chicago's offense, however, had an inconsistent day, much like we've seen throughout all of training camp thus far.

The unit still strung together some nice plays, but also had multiple mental issues pre-snap. Concerning as that is in itself, one review of quarterback Caleb Williams' day should cause even more concern for fans going into the rest of camp.

Former Dolphins standout offensive lineman Terron Armstead was in Chicago as a spectator and shares his take on what he thought about Williams' performance.

"I'm seeing him, and you can see the #1 overall pick talent," Armstead said on his YouTube show ‘The Set’. "And you see some impressive throws. But, Caleb's process — playing that quarterback position — has to improve, and pretty fast in my opinion. . ."

"On a consistent basis, Caleb was not able to recognize where he was in danger. He wasn't feeling pressure, he wasn't feeling blitzes, he wasn't seeing blitzes and threats pre-snap."

Simply put, Williams is still dealing with some of the same issues that caused him to take a league-high 68 sacks during his rookie season. Now, not all of those sacks were Williams' fault, but too many were caused by not seeing the pressure, having a bad pocket presence, or waiting too long to throw.

A week before, Williams was asked about some of the self-scouting he did to clean up some of those issues and mentioned that he needs to improve his footwork and decisiveness with the football. And yet, a week later, he's still struggling with the same issues.

By the time Week 1 rolls around, these kind of issues need to be behind the Bears' starting quarterback if this team wants to field a more efficient offense under Ben Johnson.

"For the Bears to be successful this year, and moving forward, his process has to get faster," Armstead added. "He has to be able to diagnose his threats, where the pressure is coming from, pre-snap reads, kind of understanding coverages. He has some work in that spot. And I'm rooting for Caleb."
