Former Eagle pulls back curtain on polarizing dynamic surrounding Nick Foles and Carson Wentz after Super Bowl LII win

Philadelphia Eagles fans love to think back to the 2017 NFL season, and for very good reason. That iteration of the organization was able to do something for the first time in team history, win a Super Bowl. Not only was it the team’s first Super Bowl victory, but they were also able to capture against the New England Patriots and legendary quarterback Tom Brady.

As surreal as that championship season was, things quickly unraveled afterward under head coach Doug Pederson. The 2018 season was mired by inconsistency at the quarterback position, but it was off the field that was the much bigger problem. There a divide in the locker room that was rumored to have come due to the dynamic between signal callers Carson Wentz and Nick Foles.

For those that don’t remember the end to the 2017 season, Wentz was the favorite to win the NFL MVP award before suffering a knee injury late in the season against the Los Angeles Rams. Foles came in relief, and the rest was history.

The hot topic of that offseason was whether the Eagles should roll with Wentz or Foles as the team’s starting quarterback. While Wentz was the bigger talent and had a ton of positive moments as a player, Foles was viewed as the better leader who made plays in the biggest moments. It was a fascinating debate.

As it turns out, that wasn’t just a fun debate between the fanbase. Those questions ended up splitting the locker room to a degree behind the scenes. The Eagles ended up rolling with Wentz until Foles once again needed to take over, but the team took a major step back.

The reason for that step back? It could have something to do with that quarterback controversy. Former Eagles wide receiver Golden Tate went in depth on that dynamic during a recent episode on Bussin with the Boys

Foles comes in and handles the show, and we end up pushing to the playoffs. We ended up getting put out by New Orleans but that was a different dynamic too between Foles and Carson. They tolerated each other but you could tell they were not best buds.

Carson, he was a young guy. Obviously, being drafted in the first round, and the city of Philadelphia is just hard. Everybody knows their sports, and everybody has an opinion, and they are not afraid to boo you. You can have 11 straight good games and one bad game, and you’re getting booed. Dealing like that as a young man is already hard enough, and you’re the quarterback. You are supposed to be the face of the franchise. Then this happens, Nick comes in, takes you the rest of the way. On camera, you’re super happy for the guy, but deep down, you’re thinking is this the beginning of the end, how do they view me, and to think if you’re even a huge part of the Super Bowl run although I didn’t take us the whole way. You just have all these thoughts going through your head.

You had Carson who after a good game he’s reading to see what they’re saying, but after a bad game he’s ready to see people absolute (expletive) on him. I would walk on to the bus and just see him to himself, and I like, ‘It’s alright bro, just bounce back.’ Then you have Foles who would come into the locker room. He spoke with everybody. I wouldn’t get a single pass the whole game but in the fourth quarter, he would still make me think the pass was coming. ‘Hey Golden, hey Golden, stay ready. I’m coming to you.’ I was a part of Carson’s clique, but it just felt like he had his four to five, to six guys on offense and defense that he liked, he hung with, and that was all that mattered.

Tate spent just eight regular season games with the Eagles during his lone season in 2018. Considering he wasn’t on the team the year prior, his perspective came solely from the aftermath of the quarterback controversy. His context and perspective, however, did verify what a lot of people believed.

While Wentz was the better talent, he wasn’t the best person to lead that football team. How quickly general manager Howie Roseman and the organization recovered from that debacle is a testament to the stability of the infrastructure. Just seven years later, they were able to claim their second Super Bowl victory.

Since the end of his time in Philly, Wentz has become nothing but a journeyman in the NFL. He has most recently spent time as the backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs. It has been a fascinating downfall, and Tate provided a unique perspective we haven’t heard from any other player up until this point.
