Asante Samuel once made the All-Pro First Team. He is a 4-time Pro Bowl player who had success with multiple teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles.
But, he recently proved that he isn't all that smart, taking time to go after another former Eagle, wide receiver Cris Carter, calling the Hall of Famer "overrated" on a podcast episode.
"Cris Carter is overrated, to be honest. Cris Carter is one of the most overrated cornerbacks to ever come in the NFL or into the Hall of Fame," Samuel said.
Okay, there are a few things to unpack here. Let's start with the blatantly obvious: Carter was not a cornerback. He played wide receiver. I'm sure Samuel knew this, but those weren't the words that came out of his mouth.
Strike number one.
Strike number two came when Samuel asked one of the silliest questions I have ever heard:
"As a cornerback, what do I have to worry about covering Cris Carter?"
And, strike number three came when Samuel answered that very question on his own.
"He was a hell of a route runner. He had some of the best hands in football. That's what he was known for."
Samuel would go on to answer his own question by also saying Carter would run a "crisp" route, make a catch and then get tackled immediately.
Did you know: since the NFL started tracking receptions for a first down in 1994, over 64 percent of Carter's catches moved the chains? That number was a whopping 499 receptions, to be exact.
499 first downs. 130 touchdowns.
So, what does Samuel have to worry about if he were to face Carter in his prime? The easy answer is: quite a lot, actually.
Samuel's job should be to pride himself on disallowing an opposing offense to move the chains, but that's exactly what Carter did more often than not, and not just with the Eagles. Of course, Carter spent the latter half of his career with the Minnesota Vikings.
Next time he speaks, hopefully Samuel puts a bit more thought into his words.
