In 2014, the Philadelphia Eagles spent a second-round draft pick on Jordan Matthews, a wide receiver out of Vanderbilt. Matthews had quite the career and always seemed to find his way back to Philadelphia but it's looking as though his time in the NFL could be coming to a sudden end.
Matthews, who spent the past two years with the Panthers after switching to tight end, was a part of Carolina's cuts. Considering Matthews is entering his age-33 season and hasn't had a single catch since 2019, it's fair to say that his NFL career could be over.
As mentioned, the Eagles spent a second-round pick on Matthews in 2014 and he spent the first three years of his career in Philadelphia and did well for the Eagles. Matthews tallied over 800 yards in each of his first three years in Philly and scored eight touchdowns in his first and second season.
Matthews was traded to the Bills before the 2017 season began for Ronald Darby so he was not a part of that year's Super Bowl-winning squad. He returned to Philadelphia one year later after a down year in Buffalo and had just 300 yards and two touchdowns.
Matthews then bounced between San Francisco and Philadelphia and eventually settled with the 49ers through the end of the 2022 season. He joined the Panthers in 2023 and switched to tight end but never caught a pass for them, instead spending the majority of his time on special teams.
Matthews might not have shined as brightly as he did in Philadelphia but it was clear that the Eagles respected him. Even after he was traded, he was brought back a few times. If this does end up being the end of the road for Matthews, making it in the NFL for over a decade is still quite the accomplishment and it's a bummer he couldn't be a part of the Eagles' Super Bowl win in that 2017 season.
