Former Falcons star Roddy White reveals that he had no Interest joining a future Hall of Famer once his time in Atlanta came to an end

When you talk about the most beloved Atlanta Falcons of the 2000s, you won’t find many held in higher regard than former Pro Bowl wide receiver Roddy White. During his 11 years with the team, White ended his career with 808 receptions for 10,863 yards and 63 touchdowns. He was also named an All-Pro player once during that stretch.

Originally a first round selection back in the 2005 NFL Draft out of UAB, White got off to a slower start his first couple of seasons in Atlanta. He had his breakout campaign back in 2007, and would go on to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards for six straight seasons.

Following the 2015 seasons, the Falcons franchise had to make a decision that is the toughest part of the business, moving in a different direction. Atlanta opted to release White, a decision that was met with a lot of sadness throughout the fanbase. At the age of 34, and having had three straight seasons below 1,000 receiving yards, it was becoming obvious that White’s best days were behind him.

Despite some interest around the league from various organizations following that release, the Falcons would be the only jersey that White ever wore on the NFL level. In a recent edition of the Legacy Locker Room Podcast, featuring his old teammates Julio Jones and Harry Douglas, White gave some insight into those potential opportunities back in 2016.

It included the New England Patriots, a call that White opted not to take.

“Larry Fitzgerald had called me,” White explained. “He said, ‘Hey man, Bill Belichick, he’s going to call you.’ I was like, ‘What?’ He said, ‘Yea, he’s going to call you. He asked me for your number.’ I was like that’s weird, but okay, cool. He ended up calling me because I saw a New England number on my phone. I ended up not answering the phone, which was crazy. I ended up not answering the phone.”

At the time, White also said that the Tennessee Titans were a team in consideration. That is especially interesting considering his relationship with then wide receiver coach Terry Robiskie as well. It was another opportunity White chose not to take.

Not taking a call from Coach Belichick is pretty crazy, at least just in a vacuum. He is a future Hall of Famer and has a strong argument as the best NFL coach of all time. Despite his resume, the New England Patriots didn’t interest him.

At the time, the Patriots had Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan as the top targets for quarterback Tom Brady. After those two, the wide receiver room desperately lacked quality depth. White would have provided that, at least adding a veteran presence.

For Falcons fans out there, White has become a pretty rare commodity, an all-time great that only played for one football team. Those fans are going to be wearing those No. 84 jerseys proudly forever. You will never think of another team other than Atlanta when his name comes up, and not even legendary coach could have changed that.
