When you ask about the best modern coaches in College Football history, Urban Meyer is a name that gets mentioned constantly. Over his 17-year head coaching career with Bowling Green, Utah, Florida, and Ohio State, Meyer accumulated a 187-32 overall record. That included three National Championship victories, two with the Florida Gators, and another with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
When you think about Coach Meyer, his relentless pursuit of winning, recruiting prowess, and questioned morals are all discussed. On a recent episode of Bussin’ With The Boys, a podcast hosted by Taylor Lewan and Will Compton, former Gator and NFL linebacker Channing Crowder joined the show to discuss Meyer.
Crowder was less complimentary of Meyer and his ability to build a strong roster. He had some strong words for the former coach of the Gators.

“Urban’s crew was (Ron) Zook’s recruits,” Crowder said. “From 2006-2008, those championship teams, Chris Leak won the 2006 championship. (Tim) Tebow was a gadget guy.
“All those guys, they were Zook recruits,” he continued. “Urban inherited a hell of a roster. Then Urban brought in Tebow and put some damn structure around it, and that’s when Urban started winning championships.”
At the very end of the clip, Crowder threw some shade at Coach Meyer, and his exit from Gainesville. It sounds like he didn’t completely buy his reasons for leaving, and Crowder didn’t hold back about it.
“If you look when Urban didn’t have those guys and he had to recruit his own guys, now his heart started hurting him,” he stated. “Then he went to Ohio State. He wanted to go get another batch of great recruits.”
Crowder’s final season with Florida was in 2004, the season before Meyer got there. Despite seeing him accomplish a lot with the Gators during his career, he holds a lot of negative opinions of the coach. There are clearly some who didn’t quite buy into the mastermind that was head coach Urban Meyer.
