Former Georgia Bulldogs legend Stetson Bennett shows he's worth an NFL roster spot in Rams' preseason game

Former Georgia Bulldogs legend Stetson Bennett may have just made his case for the Los Angeles Rams to keep three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster in 2025.

Bennett delivered a head-turning performance in the Rams' 31-21 preseason win over the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday. He completed 16 passes on 24 attempts for 188 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in the victory, while showcasing how valuable he is as a backup quarterback.

Following the game, Rams head coach Sean McVay made it very clear about how happy he was with Stetson.

"Stetson was awesome," McVay said after the game. "The amount of reps he's been able to get, whether you go through the spring, especially in training camp. If there is one positive from Matthew (Stafford) not being in there, it's that both Jimmy (Garoppolo) and Stetson have been able to get some reps. The overall command, I thought he got through progressions well today."

Since entering the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick by the Rams in 2023, Stetson has spent the majority of his time on the practice squad. But with Rams' starting quarterback Matthew Stafford dealing with back tightness, Stetson has finally been getting more practice reps at training camp behind Jimmy Garoppolo.

Those reps, along with Stafford's guidance, have helped Stetson adjust at the next level.

"I don't think there can be a better guy in the room than Matthew," Bennett said. "He's seen it all and been through it all, highs and lows. Just the way he goes out and handles each day …I try and learn as much from him and apply it the best I can."

His experience at Georgia has made the transition a lot easier, too.

"I was blessed at Georgia going against studs, you see why they’re doing now, just absolute animals, that helped going into it, and then reps and reps with rags, and these guys building it.”

Stay tuned for Stetson's next preseason show against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday, August 16 at 7 p.m. ET.
