The 2025 NFL season is about to begin, and roster movement is picking up across the league. One of the latest changes comes from New England, where the Patriots have added a familiar name to their quarterback room.

Former New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito has been claimed off waivers, according to Jonathan Jones, an NFL insider with CBS. The move places him in the AFC East at a time when depth behind a young franchise quarterback is crucial.

Patriots Quarterback Depth Chart

  • 1. Drake Maye
  • 2. Joshua Dobbs
  • 3. Tommy DeVito

DeVito’s new role will be as the third quarterback on the Patriots’ depth chart. He joins rookie starter Drake Maye and veteran Joshua Dobbs, creating a mix of youth and experience at the position.

The Patriots open the 2025 season with a home game against the Las Vegas Raiders. With Maye set to make his first Week 1 start, the team now has a clear plan for its quarterback group. DeVito may not see the field right away, but his addition signals New England’s determination to be prepared for any scenario.

While DeVito is not expected to compete for a starting job, his presence gives New England insurance should injuries or inconsistency arise during the season. This signing also shows the Patriots are committed to giving Maye a solid support system in his first full year leading the offense.

New England Quarterback Situation

The Patriots are heading into the 2025 season with high expectations for Drake Maye, who was selected third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. After a year of learning, the team is confident that Maye can develop into the face of the franchise. Joshua Dobbs brings valuable veteran experience and will serve as the primary backup, a role he has played successfully for multiple teams in the past.

Adding DeVito gives the Patriots flexibility. He started two games for the Giants last season and gained experience in a challenging NFC East environment. While his time in New York produced mixed results, he showed enough flashes of ability to be considered a reliable third option.

He finished his career 3-5 as a starter for the Giants over two seasons. He threw for 1,358 yards and eight touchdowns with three interceptions during that span.

Second Chance for the Quarterback

In today’s NFL, quarterback depth has never been more important. Last season showed how quickly injuries at the position can derail playoff hopes. The Patriots are in a division that includes Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Fields and Josh Allen, so having reliable options at quarterback is key for competing in the AFC East.

For DeVito, this represents a second chance. After going undrafted and working his way into the Giants' lineup, he now joins a team that is shaping its future around Maye. Even as the third quarterback, staying in the league and within a competitive environment could help extend his career.
