The New York Giants, for the first time since Daniel Jones’ best days, can feel good about their situation under center.
In the short term, Russell Wilson presents a massive upgrade over Jones and the cohort of passers that followed him during last year’s 3-14 campaign. In April, the Giants traded back into Round 1 to secure the rights to Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart.
In between them is Jameis Winston, who signed a two-year deal to be the second-string quarterback while adding to Dart’s supporting cast.
New York is positioned to be far more competent, if not competitive, than a season ago. As such, fans aren’t alone in their excitement for the upcoming season.
Former Giants running back Rashad Jennings praised their quarterback signings on “Good Morning Football.”
“Jameis Winston -- he is the morale of the locker room. He is the positive energy. He is the voice, the veteran that teaches these guys how to become pros. While who is doing the work? That is Russell Wilson collaborating with one of the greatest receivers (Malik Nabers)," Jennings said. "So I think you have to start with Russ.”
Jennings spent the final three years of his career in New York, from 2014–2016. He rushed 543 times for 2,095 yards and 10 scores and played a role on the 2016 team that made the playoffs.
It isn’t immediately clear just how long Wilson’s leash is, or if Winston would step in before Dart. The rookie is expected to have a redshirt season of sorts, although accelerated development or catastrophe could throw a wrench into those plans.
By signing two quality veterans, New York ensured that it could play Dart on its terms. A pulled hamstring or twisted ankle won’t force the rookie into action when he’s ready, and their two decades of experience only add to the factors working in Dart’s favor.
There is always uncertainty with a rookie quarterback entering the fold, but the Giants and their fans are right to be optimistic that, finally, they are handling a delicate situation appropriately.
