The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers share one of the most intense rivalries in professional sports. Opposing coaches rarely offer public praise to their fiercest competitors. However, a former Green Bay defensive coordinator recently broke that unwritten rule to commend the young quarterback leading the Bears.
Jeff Hafley served as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers before accepting the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins. During his time in Green Bay, he carried the heavy burden of trying to stop Caleb Williams.
Speaking recently to Bears Roundtable, Hafley offered significant praise for the Chicago quarterback. He specifically highlighted Williams’ incredible ability to execute off-schedule plays late in the fourth quarter.
“I just think what Caleb did at the end of the games and his ability to make off-schedule plays was incredible. I mean, that’s just me being honest. At the end of games, when he had to make off-schedule plays and somehow pull it off, he did. So, he got better throughout the season. I think he’s a really good quarterback that’s only going to get better”
Hafley admitted that when the game was on the line, Williams consistently found ways to extend plays and complete difficult passes. The former defensive coordinator concluded his thoughts by calling Williams a highly talented player who will only continue to get better.
For decades, the Packers dominated their head-to-head matchups against Chicago. Williams is actively rewriting that long-standing narrative.
During his rookie campaign, he secured a major victory at Lambeau Field. He followed that up by leading two massive comebacks against Green Bay, erasing significant deficits of 16-3 and 21-3 to stun his division rivals. Williams has now won three of his last four games against the Packers.
His unique scrambling ability repeatedly forced Green Bay defenders to chase him across the field. This exhausted the defense late in games, leading to broken coverages and massive scoring plays for the Chicago offense.
Hafley’s departure to Miami means he no longer has to game-plan for Williams twice a year. However, the rest of the NFC North must now adapt to a rapidly shifting competitive landscape.
If a rival defensive coordinator openly admits that Williams is nearly impossible to contain late in games, division opponents face a serious ongoing problem. The Bears finally have a franchise quarterback capable of carrying the team through highly contested divisional matchups.
As Williams continues to develop his skills, the balance of power in the division naturally shifts toward Chicago. The Packers, Lions, and Vikings must completely restructure their defensive approaches to contain a quarterback who consistently thrives under pressure. Keep an eye on how these division rivals adjust their defensive schemes when they face the Bears this upcoming season.
