Former Lions coach advocates for team to acquire Jalen Ramsey

The crux of the Detroit Lions in 2022 was unquestionably the team’s defense.

Needing to upgrade at seemingly every position, former Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg suggested in a recent column for the 33rd Team a move that would give Detroit’s secondary instant credibility — trading for cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

“They’ve got a heck of a coaching staff, led by defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn,” Mornhinweg said. “They play hard. They’re prepared. They put the hard work in. They just need some top-flight players. … They need to go out and acquire one or two impact players. Let’s say, for example, Jalen Ramsey of the Los Angeles Rams, his presence alone vaults that defense up in the standings, which equals more wins.”

Ramsey, a six-time Pro Bowler and a three-time First Team All-Pro, has been linked to the Lions over the last few weeks once it was reported the Rams could potentially make him available.

Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown even tried to recruit the 28-year-old cornerback to Detroit a little over a week ago.

Ramsey’s presence would help shore up a Detroit secondary that ranked 30th against the pass this year, allowing 245.8 passing yards per game while surrendering the most yards per reception (12.6) and tying for the eighth-most touchdown passes allowed (26).

Detroit had five cornerbacks who played 250 or more coverage snaps in 2022, and Jerry Jacobs was the only one who didn’t allow multiple touchdowns.

Jacobs (55) and Jeff Okudah (61.5) were the only Lions CBs to allow a completion percentage below 70, and of the team’s 12 interceptions, just three come from cornerbacks. For comparison, Ramsey allowed a completion percentage of 65.1 and had four interceptions himself.
