Over the last few days at Detroit Lions training camp and in their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, the team has seen some great things out of rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa. The showing from the former Arkansas standout has been encouraging, unlike a former Lions draft pick.
Back in 2020, Detroit drafted Quintez Cephus out of Wisconsin in the fifth round. Cephus had fallen due to some legitimate concerns, but had a ton of talent and some predicted he'd pan out much better than his draft billing. Now, though, his career has taken quite the turn.
Cephus just officially signed with the Houston Texans as he's on his third team in less than two months.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Back on June 25, Cephus was released by the Los Angeles Rams after he had signed a reserve contract with them back in January. It took him about a month to find his next gig when the San Francisco 49ers signed him on July 24.
San Francisco then cut him just a few days later, though.
Now, Cephus is in Houston where there is going to be even more competition at the wide receiver position than he's been used to with his last two teams. The Texans already had Nico Collins as their go-to wideout, but Houston also signed Christian Kirk and drafted college teammates Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel as well.
They still have Tank Dell coming back from injury and John Metchie is another recent draft pick there as well.
At this point, the writing is on the wall. Cephus hasn't appeared in a regular season game since the 2022 season with Detroit. And even then, he received three targets in a grand total of 51 snaps.
It's hard to call a fifth-round pick a "bust," but that's probably the best way to put it five years into his career. If he isn't careful, Cephus' career might be coming to an end fairly quickly.
