Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is in his second stint as a reserve quarterback with the organization. This season marks the first time he’s faced legitimate competition for the No. 2 role, however. Fellow veteran Mike White also aims to serve as the backup to reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen.
Ryan O’Halloran of the Buffalo News named Trubisky as a cut candidate on Thursday as the Bills prepare to open training camp July 23.
“Trubisky carries a $3.25 million cap hit in the final year of his contract, and if he’s cut, it would create only $1.5 million of space. But that money could be allocated to a deal at the trade deadline,” O’Halloran wrote. “To make Trubisky expendable, though, Mike White needs to have a solid preseason in what could be limited work. White has seven career regular-season starts (2-5 record).”
Shane Buechele is the fourth quarterback on the Bills’ roster entering camp. It’s unlikely he’ll be able to leapfrog both Trubisky and White on the depth chart, though.
The 2018 Pro Bowl selection served as Allen’s chief reserve in 2021 and 2024. He spent the two years in between as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Trubisky has appeared in 15 games off the bench for Buffalo, mostly in blowouts. He’s played well in those limited opportunities. He’s completed 73.5 percent of his throws (25 of 34) for 222 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Those numbers equate to a solid 97.9 passer rating.
Perhaps most importantly, the 30-year-old Ohio native has built a strong friendship with Allen, which has built a lot of cohesion in the locker room.

“It seemed like a great spot for me,” Trubisky said after rejoining the Bills last year. “I was there two years ago. It was a great organization, and I have a great relationship with Josh and the offensive staff. Just going back there felt like home and a good position for me and my family. I’m excited to be back there and be a Buffalo Bill again.”
Trubisky struggled as a rookie after the Chicago Bears selected him with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He looked like a star on the rise in 2019, though. He threw a career-high 24 touchdowns while leading the Bears to a 12-4 record.

The UNC product could never quite build on that success. He endured two more up-and-down years in Chicago before the franchise decided to move on. With no opportunity to start, he opted to join the Bills ahead of the 2021 season.
Trubisky received a couple more chances to lead an offense during his two seasons in Pittsburgh, which featured 12 appearances (seven starts). His performance was underwhelming, however, as he compiled eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions while posting a 2-5 record.
He rejoined the Bills on a two-year, $5.25 million contract in March 2024.
Trubisky is the favorite. He knows the offense, has enjoyed modest success when called upon, and forged a strong relationship with Allen. He’ll win the backup role if he can put together a mostly mistake-free training camp and preseason.
White can’t be completely ruled out, though. He continues to receive NFL opportunities because of a single start: a 2022 outing for the New York Jets where he connected on 22 of his 28 throws for 315 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. None of his other appearances have come anywhere close to matching that success.
How much fun are the #Bills having?
So much so that QB Josh Allen had to stop mid-answer during his press conference after Mitch Trubisky and Mike White kept throwing a Nerf Vortex around after practice

Ultimately, the Bills are only going to keep two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Buechele is a safe bet to serve as the practice squad QB, a role he filled in 2023 before missing last season with a neck injury. So, it’s probably a direct battle between Trubisky and White for one spot.
Trubisky enters the competition with the advantage, but it’ll add some spice to the otherwise mundane camp that’s likely on the horizon for Buffalo.
