Former NFL Quarterback Suggests Two Vet WRs for Titans to Add

The Tennessee Titans have bolstered their team this offseason with key draft picks and free-agent signings in areas of need. However, even with that, some still think they need more.

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert is one of those who think the Titans need more, and he believes they need an addition at the wide receiver position. When speaking on the Bleacher Report digital platform, this is what he had to say and the players he mentioned.

"Give me DJ Chark as a flyer to the Titans," Benkert said, via The Sporting News. "He's a guy who's always had potential but hasn't been healthy enough to stay on the field. Give him one more chance and see if Cam Ward can bring out the best in the former great LSU wide receiver. If they don't go the Chark route, give me the Titans to snag Gabe Davis on the flyer route again. He can be another veteran presence, maybe have a resurgence, for a rookie quarterback that will need some help."

After the initial shock of Benkert mentioning Chark and Davis wore off, the thought of these two being on the team had to be examined. Upon further examination, it is not in the best interest of either of these two to be in the Titans' wide receiver room at this time.

First, health is an issue for both wide receivers at the moment. Davis missed the last seven games of the season with Jacksonville in 2024 with a torn meniscus in his left knee. Along with the surgery to repair the torn meniscus he suffered in November 2024, he also had some complications in recovery, and as of June 2025, he was still considered not ready to sign because of health reasons.

With that health risk out there, there would have been no guarantees he would have been healthy when the season started.

And as for Chark, he has been a tantalizing physical talent throughout his career. However, he has never played a full season of games in his seven-year career. He only played in seven games last season while dealing with knee, hip, shoulder and groin injuries while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers.

Along with the health issues, the issue of consistency is also present. Chark had an incredible second season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team that drafted him. He amassed 73 receptions for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns in the 2019 season. However, aside from that season, he has only once reached over 700 yards receiving in his career, and has had a tendency to make plays sometimes but also miss them in other situations.

Davis, on the other hand, can have great games where he shows up, but then he can be inexplicably absent from the impact stats in the next game. An example is his 2023 season with the Bills, where he had big games, such as his 12 receptions, 105 yards, and one touchdown performance against the Eagles in a loss. The following week against the Jets, he had zero receptions and yards despite playing 88% of the offensive snaps. This inconsistency is a defining characteristic of Davis's impact on the game and has been present throughout his career.

Davis and Chark are talented wide receivers, and some teams may take a chance on them. However, as far as the Titans, the focus now is on developing the young wide receivers, along with the veterans they signed, such as Cam Ward. And with the Titans, this seems to be the plan of action going forward.
