Former NFL Star Reveals Strong Opinion On Patriots’ Drake Maye

Burress went on to say that he isn’t enamored with Maye’s college statistics, especially considering that the University of North Carolina product played in the ACC.

Earlier in the offseason, Maye was viewed by many as the clear-cut second-best quarterback prospect in this year’s draft class. Heck, during the regular season, some felt he could challenge Caleb Williams for the No. 1 overall selection.

However, as time went on, Maye’s stock dropped, and by time the NFL Draft was set to take place late last month, it became obvious that Jayden Daniels had leapfrogged him, and some even questioned if Maye was the third-best signal-caller of the group.

Maye is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 63.3 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 449 yards and nine scores.

The 21-year-old arrived at North Carolina in 2021 and became the full-time starter in 2022. That year, Maye flashed considerable potential, totaling 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns and seven picks while completing 66.2 percent of his throws. In addition, he registered 698 yards and seven scores as a rusher.

Clearly, Maye took a step back this past season, and some have pointed out his questionable mechanics heading into the professional level.

Many have also lobbied for the Patriots to sit Maye behind Jacoby Brissett in his rookie campaign so he doesn’t suffer the same fate as Mac Jones.

New England is almost bereft of proven talent at the skill positions, so thrusting Maye into action in Week 1 may not be good for him long term.

We’ll see how the Pats handle Maye as the offseason progresses, but things certainly don’t seem to have gotten off to a great start for Drake Maye in Foxborough.
