Former Ohio State QB Justin Fields’ football career looks to be at a major crossroads after being slammed by NFL owner

Justin Fields was a star with the Ohio State Buckeyes in college, and when he was selected No. 11 overall by the Chicago Bears in 2021, many thought it would mark the start of a strong professional career. That hasn’t been the case. Fields has played for three teams in five seasons. After putting together six solid starts last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he signed a two-year, $30 million deal with the New York Jets.

After six starts this season, things still aren’t working well for either the Jets or Fields, and a quarterback change appears to be on the horizon. The Bears gave up on Fields after the 2023 season and traded him to the Steelers, but Pittsburgh turned to Russell Wilson as the starter for the final 11 regular-season games in 2024. Now, it looks like Fields is once again in a difficult situation.

Jets owner Woody Johnson doesn’t hold back about the former Buckeye

“It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he’s got,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said on Tuesday. “I mean, he has ability, but something just is not jiving… You have to play consistently at that position, and that’s what we’re going to try to do for the remainder of the season.”

Fields has made six starts this season for the 0-7 Jets and is averaging just 140 passing yards per game. The former Buckeye has thrown four touchdowns and no interceptions but has lost two fumbles. Just 845 passing yards through six games is rough, and the Jets are reportedly expected to turn to veteran Tyrod Taylor moving forward.

“If we can just complete a pass, it would look good,” Johnson said. “We gotta complete some passes. You gotta convince them you can do something, otherwise it’s hard to have a game you can win.”

It appears Fields is once again in a situation that may not work out for him unless something changes soon. He still has all the athleticism you could want in a quarterback, but he’s never been able to replicate the passing success he had at Ohio State in the NFL. Another tough stretch has arrived for Fields — and it doesn’t look promising.
