Former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard won a National Championship with the Buckeyes just a few months ago—and now, he’s beginning his NFL journey.
Howard transferred to Ohio State from Kansas State with only one year of eligibility, aiming to compete on college football’s biggest stage and boost his draft stock. He accomplished both during his time in Columbus.
Now selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, Howard is already taking a thoughtful approach to his pro career. One smart move? Building a relationship with one of the greatest Steelers of all time.
“We actually have the same agent, so we got connected through that,” Howard said on Up & Adams about his connection with Ben Roethlisberger. “He’s been really good. He’s been super supportive of me through this whole process. Now, being a Steeler and getting to know him, he’s been really helpful. He texted me last week to check in—he’s just been a really good mentor. I can see him continuing to be a great mentor for me going forward. He’s been super nice to me so far.”
Building smart relationships is key for professional athletes, and surrounding himself with people who’ve been there before could be a major asset for Howard. He has long-term goals of becoming a franchise quarterback for the Steelers, and having someone like Roethlisberger in his corner is a step in the right direction.
Howard isn’t a lock to make the final roster as a sixth-round pick and could face a battle if Aaron Rodgers signs with Pittsburgh. He’s expected to be the QB3 behind Mason Rudolph at best when that happens. Still, expect the former Buckeye to be ready when his opportunity comes as a rookie or beyond.
