Former Ohio State star Joey Bosa has a chance to make something special happen after receiving news he wishes he hadn’t

Ahead of NFL free agency beginning next week, teams around the league are working on getting their books in order. To do that, teams sometimes have to part ways with players with high salaries.

Former Ohio State star Joey Bosa was the most recent example of that, as he was cut by the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday evening. It was a move that saved the Chargers $25 million on the cap.

Now, Bosa is a free agent after spending nine years with the Chargers. When the Chargers were in San Diego, they selected Bosa No. 3 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Joey Bosa now has a chance to make something special happen with his brother

One team that jumped off the page right away that could land the former Chargers pass rusher is the San Francisco 49ers. It would be a chance for Joey and Nick Bosa to team up and rush the passer together. Joey isn’t the elite pass rusher that Nick is in the year 2025, but he still is a viable option opposite of Nick.

Joey isn’t going to break the bank and take a hefty contract to land him. He had five sacks in 14 games during the 2024 season and had just nine sacks in the combined two years. Injuries have been an issue with Bosa, who has missed 23 games over the last three seasons.

Both players were former five-star recruits who were stars in Columbus. Joey won a National Championship with the Buckeyes and had 13.5 sacks during that 2013 season. Nick’s best season was also his sophomore year when he had 8.5 sacks. The two never got to play in Columbus together because Nick’s first year in Columbus was in 2016 when Joey was drafted.

There aren’t two better pass-rushing brothers in the NFL right now and there haven’t been over the last decade. If the two can team up with the 49ers, that would make for quite the story if they can create some havoc. For now, it is just smoke it appears, but with free agency beginning next week, it could soon heat up.
