Since being selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, one former Ohio State Buckeyes player’s career has not gone exactly according to plan.
Justin Fields will be on his third NFL team in 2025 after spending the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Fields was traded to the Steelers by the Chicago Bears, who decided he wasn’t their franchise quarterback and selected Caleb Williams instead.
Now, Fields has a promising opportunity with the New York Jets, where he’s reunited with former Ohio State teammate Garrett Wilson. The NFL schedule may also be offering Fields a prime stage to prove himself.
As of now, the Steelers have not signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers, despite widespread expectations. Pittsburgh currently lacks a clear starting quarterback, and it didn’t have to be this way. There was interest in bringing Fields back, but the team was unwilling to guarantee him the starting role. Now, it appears Fields may get his shot at the Steelers in Week 1 of the 2025 season.

The official NFL schedule drops at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, but several leaks have surfaced over the past few days. A Jets-Steelers matchup in Week 1 makes sense — potentially featuring Rodgers against his old team and Fields against his.
Fields showed improvement last season, throwing just one interception against five touchdown passes in six starts. The former Buckeye was benched for Russell Wilson once Wilson returned from injury, as part of a predetermined plan. Still, Fields posted a 4-2 record as a starter in 2024, with 1,106 passing yards and 289 rushing yards.
Storylines matter in the NFL — and Justin Fields is at the center of a compelling one to open the 2025 season.
