Former Panther reacts to being cut by Carolina
Carolina Panthers linebacker Jadeveon Clowney (7)

Jadeveon Clowney walked into OTAs expecting to get to work. Instead, he got the cold shoulder.

After just one year into his two-year, $20 million contract, the Carolina Panthers have officially released the veteran edge rusher, bringing a swift and surprising end to what was supposed to be a stabilizing presence for a rebuilding defense.

“I went to OTAs Day 1 and they kinda told me they weren’t expecting me to be there,” Clowney told The Athletic. “I got a sense then they wanted me out of the building… I’ve been around the game long enough to know, so I was OK.”

The 32-year-old pass rusher showed he had plenty left in the tank last season. In 17 games, Clowney posted 46 total tackles—his highest since 2018—and led the team with 5.5 sacks. He was a veteran anchor for a defense that battled through growing pains and inconsistency in a 5–12 season.

But Clowney also read the signs.

The Panthers signaled a clear direction during the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting two promising edge rushers—Nic Scourton from Texas A&M and Princely Umanmielen form Ole Miss both on Day 2. Add in the offseason signing of 26-year-old Pat Jones II on a $15 million deal, and the writing was indeed on the wall.

Clowney’s exit isn’t just about a numbers game—it’s a message. Carolina is leaning into its youth movement under new head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan. It’s about speed, upside, and long-term development, even if that means cutting ties with proven veterans.

What’s next for Clowney? While no longer the game-wrecking force he once was, his production and leadership could still make him a valuable addition for a playoff contender in need of pass-rush depth.

For Panthers fans, Clowney’s release is more than just a roster move—it’s a reminder that the franchise is fully committed to a new era. One that might come with growing pains, but also with the promise of building something lasting.
