While a lot of the attention in New England is centered on new head coach Mike Vrabel, one of his assistant coaches might have a larger impact on the Patriots' most prized possession.
Josh McDaniels has returned to New England as an offensive coordinator, this time under Vrabel instead of Bill Belichick. While he has caught some flack for his bizarre situational playcalling, he has played a hand in some of New England's best offensive seasons.
Similarly, former offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia was an offensive line whisperer for the Patriots. Scarencchia detailed to ESPN's Mike Reiss how McDaniels will coach quarterback Drake Maye.
"[McDaniels will] be with the quarterback a big part of every game. He's going to be there with him on the sideline, making sure they're seeing the game through one set of eyes, and that they're on the same page with everything," Scarnecchia told Reiss. "He'll coach fair and he'll coach hard, and he'll get the most out of him -- just like he's done with every quarterback he has coached since I've been around here. That's Tom [Brady], but there have been others. Matt Cassel. Jimmy Garoppolo. Cam Newton. Mac Jones. He's had a lot of different guys and they've all done pretty well. I think that speaks volumes for him -- as a quarterbacks coach and coordinator."
While Brady is arguably the greatest player to grace the gridiron, the rest of the bunch didn't perform as spectacularly in New England. It will be interesting to see how Maye performs in his second season.
Maye had a quality start to his NFL career. He showed promising signs under center and impressed with his ability to escape pressure and gain yards on the ground. In total, the rookie threw for 2,276 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in just 13 games while also rushing for 421 yards and two touchdowns.
It will be hard for the Patriots to do worse than they did in 2024. After going 4-13, fans in New England can't take much more embarrassment on the field.
If McDaniels can work his magic on the sidelines and Maye is able to take the next step in his career, Patriots fans will have something to be excited about again.
