Former Patriots coordinator: Bill Belichick wouldn’t hesitate to fire his own sons

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has never been one to let an assistant coach overstay their welcome, but what if said assistants were his own flesh and blood?

On a recent episode of “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI, former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weiss disclosed that he believes Belichick would have no qualms with firing either of his sons, Stephen and Brian, who serve as linebackers coach and safeties coach, respectively, on New England’s staff.

“He would fire his sons; he would,” Weiss exclaimed. “He would fire them, too. If he felt somebody wasn’t doing what was best for the team, it wouldn’t make a difference who it was. Would he hold the coaches accountable? You betcha. But those guys named ‘Belichick,’ they’re in the accountability group, too. Just so you know.”

Stephen has been on the Patriots staff since 2012, starting as a defensive assistant before working his way up to safeties coach and then outside linebackers coach. He has three Super Bowl rings.

Brian got his start with the Patriots in 2016 as a scouting assistant before being promoted to a coaching assistant in 2017 and then to safeties coach in 2020. He has two Super Bowl rings.

While Bill may be ruthless enough to cut his own progenies loose should it come down to it, neither Belichick offspring likely has anything to worry about. The Patriots have the No. 4 overall defense, and they rank fourth in interceptions, sixth in takeaways, and allow the sixth-fewest points in the NFL.
