Former Patriots Legends Reveal Their QB Choice if Tom Brady Never Existed

Former New England Patriots legends Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski recently answered the question on their  Dudes on Dudes Podcast of which quarterback they would want to lead their team if their future Hall of Famer Tom Brady never existed.

The Patriots' receiving duo gave separate answers that nobody should be surprised about, but they may not be the guys everyone would expect. Neither picked Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Gronkowski answered the question first by picking Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

"Josh Allen, I love his game. It reminds me of myself at the quarterback position," Gronkowski said on the Dudes on Dudes podcast (h/t patriotswire). "That was a no-brainer for me. That was the first quarterback that popped up in my head."

Allen has risen to become one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL over his seven-year career, winning his first MVP in 2024.

Edelman agreed that Allen would be a great choice, but opted to go a different route with his choice. The former Patriots' receiver went with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.

"I would love Josh Allen, but I would love to have Burrow. I mean, you would love to have Mahomes. Our offense is a little different. There's a little more drop-back pass. I don't know, I mean, Mahomes is pretty good, too, but I think Burrow," Edelman said. "I don't want someone running as much as Mahomes on those third downs. I want them throwing because I want those third downs."

Edelman's choice may have been more because he wanted to touch the ball more often with whoever was at quarterback.

With Mahomes and Allen being two of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the league, Burrow is known more for his arm and spraying the ball around to his weapons.

Both Burrow and Allen are coming off excellent seasons, as Burrow led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns, and Allen won the MVP award. But it is a little surprising neither Edelman or Gronkowski chose the Chiefs' three-time Super Bowl MVP.
