The Houston Texans are releasing former New England Patriots starter Shaq Mason, according to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz. Mason started 15 games for the Texans last year and only recorded three penalties. Mason is 31 and going to be a free agent, looking for a new home or an old one.

Mason is a perfect candidate for a Patriots reunion, and he can help them fix what might be the biggest problem on the roster. Mason spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Patriots before being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then being traded again to the Houston Texans, with whom he has spent the last two seasons.

Mason would be a perfect fit back in New England because he understands the culture, the city, and what it takes to be successful in that environment. Mason was a starter for two Super Bowl-winning teams in New England and was also the starter for the Patriots when they lost the Super Bowl to the Eagles.

Mason has not only had success but had success in New England. He can be a perfect mentor for the Patriots young offensive line and team up with former teammate David Andrews. Mason has also come off of two consecutive playoff seasons with the Texans, and with his skillset and experience, he will instantly be one the Patriots best offensive linemen.

Mason has been healthy, and he is a terrific pass blocker. A lot of the guys New England has looked at for the offensive line, whether it be via draft or free agency, have been better run-blockers than pass-blockers. That is important as the Patriots do need help in the run game, but Mason fits perfectly in the sense that the Patriots need people who will protect young quarterback Drake Maye.

Maye is supposed to be the superstar of the future, so having a great pass blocker who is familiar with the organization could be exactly what he needs. At 31 years old, the former fourth-round pick could be very affordable and a great option for the Patriots to bring in to help with their offensive line.

The Patriots are in desperate need of another guard, and bringing back a familiar face might be their best option.
