The Carolina Panthers have cut former Pitt cornerback Dane Jackson after just one season with the franchise.

Jackson — who starred at Pitt from 2015-19 as a versatile defensive back — signed a 2-year, $14.5 million deal with the Panthers in the offseason but battled through injuries this season.

He suffered a hamstring injury in training camp that forced him to miss the start of the season and returned to the lineup in October. He made three starts across nine appearances.

In nine games, Jackson recorded 23 tackles (15 solo), a tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

Jackson was coming off a season in Buffalo in which he played in 15 games, making six starts in the process, and he recorded 39 tackles (34 solo), five pass breakups and a forced fumble.

He was more impactful in 2022, starting 14 of 15 games due to an injury-riddled secondary, and he turned the opportunity into a season of 57 tackles (49 solo), a tackle for loss, two interceptions, 12 pass breakups and a forced fumble.

In four seasons with the Bills, after being selected with the 239th pick (seventh round) in the 2020 NFL Draft, Jackson played in 52 games (28 starts) and racked up 152 tackles (129 solo), two tackles for loss, three interceptions, 28 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a recovery.

Jackson originally redshirted as a true freshman out of Quaker Valley High in Coraopolis, Pa. in 2015 before he emerged as a multi-year starter on the backend. He racked up 149 tackles (113 solo), nine tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, four interceptions, 39 pass breakups, four forced fumbles, two recoveries and two defensive touchdowns.

Jackson started all but one game between 2017-19, earning All-ACC honors in 2018 and 2019. And he was voted a team captain in 2019.

He’s one of a large number of former Pitt stars, from the secondary, that are currently playing in the NFL — including Damar Hamlin, Jordan Whitehead, Damarri Mathis, Jason Pinnock and Avonte Maddox.
