Former Pro Bowl QB coming out of retirement, rejoining Lions

The Detroit Lions are adding a familiar face to their quarterback room ahead of the final stretch of the season.

As reported by Ian Rapoport on X, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is coming out of retirement and is expected to rejoin the Lions. At this point, it remains unclear if Bridgewater is signing to the team's practice squad or straight to the 53-man roster. 

Bridgewater was most recently with the Lions last season serving as the team's primary backup quarterback. He played nine NFL seasons with six different teams before retiring at the end of the 2023 season. 

His last NFL action came on Oct. 8, 2023 in a 42-24 victory over the Carolina Panthers where Bridgewater came in when the game was all but over to run down the clock at the end of the game.

After his retirement, Bridgewater took over as head coach at his high school alma mater, Miami Northwestern, leading his team to a Class 3A state championship with a 41-0 victory in the championship game.

After winning the state title, the former quarterback opened up about his desire to return to the league saying.

Bridgewater is still only 32-years-old, and with his experience with the Lions franchise, the quarterback could prove to be a key off-the-field addition for the Lions Super Bowl push this season.
